Rock The Comp – Saturday 25th June

June 14th, 2011

rockcompAn opportunity will be given on Saturday 25th June to see, live on stage at Llantwit Major Comprehensive School performances from a number of young people involved with Llantwit Major based charity Major Music.

‘Rock the Comp’ is scheduled to start at 7.30pm in the main school hall, and with tickets priced at £2 in advance – available from the geography department at the school or Chris Williams Optometrist, Llantwit Major, or on the door on the night priced at £3…….amazing value!!

The event itself has come about at the request of a number of young people who  attend the weekly music workshops organised by Major Music, and who wanted to give other young people the opportunity of seeing for themselves what musical creativity is all about. Those young people planning and organising the event also wanting to put on an event in the local community and making the event then itself easier to access and avoiding transportation difficulties.

Although the target audience for the evening will be teenagers, and with a non-alcoholic bar being available throughout the evening, the event will be open also to many of the friends, family, sponsors and supporters of Major Music who throughout have remained amazed at the talent of young people at various levels, and who at the same time welcome the opportunity of attending these showcase events.

Speaking on behalf of Major Music Phil Kirkham, chairman and co-founder of Major Music stated how important these kind of events are to young people, giving them the chance to perform ‘live’ in front of an audience  improving confidence, self esteem and allowing young people to achieve personal aspirations and goals. Phil commented further, “seeing young people perform, enjoying themselves with smiles on their faces, and then coming off stage and asking about when the next event is, sum’s up what it’s all about and makes me proud to be part of Major Music”. At the same time Phil expressing his appreciation also to his fellow trustees, management team and volunteers and who’s ongoing support, dedication and commitment to the project has been truly fantastic! The support given by the Vale Council, Roland (UK), VCVS and a number of other local businesses, organisations and individuals also proving to be invaluable.

Brothers Sam and James Williams have been attending Major Music for several years now and clearly enjoy the workshops and events, “…..we enjoy playing Major Music gigs because it gives us the opportunity to show our talent and spend our free time doing something we love. As teenagers it’s nice to show the public that the youth of today have something to offer. The event on the 25th June will be  rather special to us as we will be performing in front of many more people we know and who in the past couldn’t always attend the gigs organised by Major Music”.

Another young person, Gareth Jones feels that, “… attending Major Music has been like a’ jump start’ for a musical career, and being able to mix with young people with similar interests has been great”. Gareth’s father Paul comments,  “….Major Music gives Gareth the opportunity to expand his skill playing his guitar,….meeting other young people and where he gains in confidence in playing live concerts, giving him the foundation of moving into a career in the future in the music industry……Major Music is the perfect starting point…”.

The event on the 25th June is being run with the support of the school’s  PTA, and where Major Music are keen to promote partnerships, initiatives and events with other organisations in the local community.

‘Rock the Comp’ is scheduled to start at 7.30pm in the main school hall, and with tickets priced at £2 in advance – available from the geography department at the school or Chris Williams Optometrist, Llantwit Major, or on the door on the night priced at £3…….amazing value!!
